“The image – static and moving - has become a central presence in our lives, both individually and collectively. It fascinates us, confronts us, overwhelms us, questions us and often enough, summons the power to consume us.
If the image gathered steam in the 20th Century, it grew in heft and depth in the 21st. We are aware of how it increasingly frames and brackets our desires, our hopes, our sense of ourselves as also our fears and anxieties. It has developed the strength to steer, influence, order and capture our inner and outer worlds like never before.
How does this image acquire its manifold energies and which are its various incarnations? How does it ‘speak’ to us in our social, political, aesthetic, personal, psychological and professional interactions? What are its inner workings and intimate equations? How do we prepare ourselves to become empowered citizens of the future - in a universe processed and networked by mass media?
At the Dr. Shantilal K. Somaiya School of Art, we embark on a mission of asking these demanding questions and equipping ourselves with new ways of seeing, reading, experimenting and experiencing. Through a study of the expressive arts, we hope to critically understand and appreciate, respond and explore the richly layered and transforming world around us.”
